What should you consider when setting up cameras for Vision AI
Image quality has a direct impact on what a Vision AI model can recognize. Resolution determines how many pixels are available, but reliable detection also depends on factors such as lighting, sharpness, compression, camera angle and the size of an object in the image.
A camera with more megapixels therefore does not automatically produce better Vision AI results.
An AI model can only analyze visual features that are actually visible. A person standing close to the camera occupies far more pixels than someone walking dozens of meters away. As a result, details such as clothing, posture or small objects become harder to distinguish at greater distances. How much detail is required depends on the application.
Detecting a person generally requires less detail than:
The important question is therefore not only how many pixels a camera has, but how many useful pixels the relevant object occupies in the image.
No. More pixels are only useful when they add meaningful visual information. A high-resolution image can still be difficult to analyze because of:
A sharp 1080p image with a good camera angle can therefore be more suitable than a 4K image in which the relevant object is small, blurred or poorly lit.
Not necessarily. Many AI models process images at a fixed input resolution. The original camera image may therefore be resized before analysis. This means that additional megapixels are not automatically fully used by the AI model. At the same time, a higher source resolution can still be valuable when only part of the image is analyzed or when small objects need to retain enough detail.
A good Vision AI installation should therefore not start with the question:
> How many megapixels does this camera have?
But with:
> What does the system need to recognize, from what distance and how large will that object appear in the image?
Factors to consider include:
Higher resolution also usually requires more bandwidth and storage and, depending on the architecture, may require more processing power.
For Vision AI, good image quality ultimately means providing the model with enough useful visual information.
The right resolution provides sufficient detail, but camera angle, lighting, sharpness and the size of the object in the image are just as important.
