I/O integration: how Video AI Analytics opens doors
But before we delve deeper into that question, let’s look at the concept of I/O. Because, what exactly is that?
What is I/O?
In industrial automation, I/O stands for ‘Input/Output’. It refers to a standardized communication protocol used to connect sensors and actuators that are in the field and the controllers that manage the process. When we talk about ‘Input‘, we speak about the information the sensors collect, such as temperature, pressure, current, level, or position. The sensors convert these signals into digital signals and send them to the for processing.
‘Output‘ describes the signals the controller sends to the actuator, such as doors, lights, barriers, motors, valves, etc. In turn, the actuators will interpret the signals and perform a physical action.
An I/O integration allows you to automate certain processes based on information collected by various sensors in the field. Such a sensor can be anything: a thermometer, a float, a motion sensor or in the case of Video AI Analytics: a camera.
I/O and Video AI Analytics
By connecting cameras to a Video AI Analytics system, you enrich them with intelligence. In doing so, you’re actually transforming them into smart sensors. The images these cameras capture are full of information. And that information provides insights that can be used directly to initiate actions and automate processes. This is the point where I/O integration between sensors in the field, a Video AI Analytic system and an actuator (e.g., a door) can be of great value. But what does that look like in practice?
I/O integration in practice
An I/O integration in combination with a Video AI Analytic system can be deployed in several ways. Below we describe three of the many:
Security and access control
An integration between I/O and Video AI Analytics strengthens a security system. Is an intruder or unauthorized person detected by the camera? Then through the I/O integration, the Video AI Analytics system can send a trigger to access control devices to lock doors, activate an alarm or take other security measures.
It works the other way around, of course. If, based on facial recognition, license plate recognition or OCR/barcode recognition, it is determined that a person or vehicle is indeed allowed to enter, then doors or barriers can be opened.
Quality control
Video AI Analytics enables real-time quality control in production environments. By analyzing video streams from production lines, the system can detect defects and/or deviations and provide immediate feedback to I/O-enabled actuators to adjust production processes or sort out defective products.
Traffic Management
The integration between Video AI Analytics and I/O is also applicable within traffic management systems. For example, by using traffic cameras to analyze vehicles and traffic flows, traffic patterns, congestion and accidents can be detected. This information can then be used to control smart traffic light systems via I/O.
